Since the population is growing by leaps and bounds and the baby-boomer generation is all ready to retire, the demand of nursing is skyrocketing. Nevertheless, in spite of the tremors of recession felt across the world, health care industry has remained almost unaffected due to its service, which is mandatory! Nursing has been one of the most sought after careers since many years and statistics reveal that it would continue to be in action for decades to come. But then, what makes you to think becoming nurse? Is it the salary/package you get or the service you wanna serve the mankind?
The question may come like a bullet through the brain and you may rethink about your decision! Of course, the nursing has demand, future and salary –all! Only in United States, there are more than 2.5 million nurses (Registered) but still not enough to satisfy the hunger that the sector of health care has. If you are driven by the desire to feel the difference in a career, which is about care-giving and compassion, you have set up your mind in a right direction. Being a nurse would sooth the brain as well as the soul since you just help relieving the pain and sprain from the patient’s body.
Being a nurse also makes you to think critically that is rooted in evidence based medical cases. There have been stupendous opportunities for baccalaureate-prepared nurse who is registered with local health board. For the nurse, the doors of success are opened at several health service providing centers such as hospitals, health care clinics, public health settings, PHCs (Primary Health Centers) and many more.
Nursing for Service
Indeed, nursing is a noble profession and an ideal nurse would have contributed her commitment and dedication to the patients by giving a healing touch. Often, we hear the sentence said by someone “I care you!” and this makes your day. The nurse’s job is to care the patients suffering from one or more signs and symptoms.
The profession of nurse is all about caring and healing that is solely based on scientific but moral and philosophical frame. The harmony between the medical science and the humankind acknowledges a deepest value of quality in service to make the life free from diseases. Nurse has capability to include her ethical, physical, psychological and moral characteristics to augment with medicines for a quicker recovery of the patient.
Nursing for Salary
In the year of 2004, the average annual income for a registered nurse was approximately $54,000 and the figure has not dropped ever! Nurses have been constantly getting raise over the time and nevertheless, they earn more by getting extra shifts and overtimes. The demand for nursing would continue to rise for quite a long run and every year, more and more private practitioners, health care providers, super specialists, physicians and surgeons are now hiring nurses to lessen their burden. All in all, this gets you an enormous amount of scope in health care industry. Not to say, if you super specialize the nursing (for instance, core nursing in cardiology department), the earnings are unlimited!
No matter why you chose nursing for, it is the niche area that would never let you down.
Just before our senior year in high school comes to a close, there is a tie when we sit down with our counselor to discuss our future career with us. At that moment of our lives choosing a career may not be at the forefront of our minds. After all, we are just teenagers and all we care to know are the trivial things in life and how to have fun. We know nothing of the hardships in life. Some may encounter difficult realities, but most people practically coast through teenage life pretty easily. It may seem ironic, but it is at high school where we make the choices that could ultimately direct and change our lives.
In the recent years prior to the recession there has been a great demand for health care practitioners like the nurses, CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) and LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses). The financial gain when working as an RN, CNA, or LPN is rather good considering that the degree needed in order to become a nurse isn’t that tedious at all. For CNAs, it doesn’t even take more than a year of studying to finish the program. The monetary gain is a strong motivating factor in taking the course on nursing.
In countries like the Philippines and India, a lot of incoming college freshman are enrolling in health-related courses. While there are a number of students who take the course by their own liking, majority are forced to take it following the demands of their parents. Teenagers who do not know what they want or who they want to be in the future may cave in to their parents’ wishes and just go along with the flow.
Four years later, the world has a new batch of graduate nurses that are academically prepared to make it to the real world. The question is, is being academically prepared enough to make a nurse out of a person. The answer is definitely a big no.
One person’s head may get filled with all the necessary information needed by a nurse on the job. However, an innate motivation from within the person is very important.
Nurses should be self-driven. They should have the calling to serve and help people not just during working hours while inside the facility but at all times. Being a nurse does not end when you walk out of the hospital. You carry the mantle with you wherever you go even when you are not wearing your uniform.
Nurses should learn to love their job. It comes along eventually for some. Unless that happens, they will always be counting the minutes to go until the end of the shift. We should put our minds in the job.
Being a nurse is a noble profession. We shouldn’t tarnish the name of the profession by performing incompetently. Nurses need to have that genuine care and compassion toward their patients. Patients on the other hand need the healing hands that care and not robots that were only driven to work by financial motivation.
There is a lot at stake when you force yourself into a job that you do not put your heart into. Nurses easily get distracted when they do not focus on their work. Their inclination toward other things may become a weak spot that may eventually cause them to commit an error. Nurses deal with lives. There is no room for mistakes here, because a mistake could mean the difference between the life and death of a patient.

Each and every person should have some basic knowledge about First Aid. By nature, all of us do have some basic knowledge and idea about first aid, which we do by instinct. For example, assume that you are working in a kitchen cutting the vegetables with a sharp knife. A sudden call or some urgent work distracts your attention and you injure yourself with a minor cut in the fingers. Immediately what you do is apply from pressure in the wounded part to arrest the blood flow, clean with the area with water and immediately tie the wound with a piece of cloth soaked in water. Is it not? It is what we call it First Aid. These things we do by instinct many times, but the nature and cause of many ailments do not give advance notice to us before attacking.
It so happens sometimes that even for a minor ailment such as sore throat, people get panic and queue before the hospital for treatment. More than the severity of the problem, the panic that causes is what kills a person more. By getting training in first aid and knowing about these basic health-related issues, one can definitely lead a good life free from panic and worry. More than the confidence, what the knowledge about First Aid teaches us the precautions and care we should exercise while doing activities.
In fact, a good knowledge about First Aid will help in following the adage – “Prevention is better than cure” more than providing first aid and then opting for cure.
First aid is essential for all people in all walks of life. Assume that you are traveling in a public transport system such as bus. You see a person driving a bike or a car collides in an accident and hurt himself or herself badly. You can immediately administer some first aid to the person and help him or her get admitted to the hospital for further treatment.
If you are a teacher, a worker in the factory, a police man, a driver or even a farmer, you need to have some knowledge about first aid. Awareness of the importance of first aid and if possible, a certificate in first aid training will make you fell confident about life, extend your services to the suffering persons at large, and above all, you can get the satisfaction of having saved a person’s life.
