Nursing assistants have contributed to the medical field by their hard work. They help their patients to meet their basic necessities. They build close relationship with these patients and get close to them. They are trained to do such stuff and this training is really helpful for others. They have skills to work hard, and work under pressure.

Though these nurses take pride in their work, but they also feel they are being taken for granted. They do so much work while remaining in the background. This is why people fail to realize their importance and appreciate them. There are several ways in which these nurses can be appreciated.

Many families leave a thank you card or note to these assistant nurses. This simple note makes a huge difference as these notes motivate these nurses as they feel that there are people who recognize their hard work. This makes them work much harder. A small gift such as a flower bouquet and chocolates can really make a big difference while you are thanking a person for their work.

We have seen that nurses do not appreciate their assistant’s good work and only point out at the mistakes they have made. This needs to be changed as just a small word of appreciation makes a huge difference. Employers should make nurses feel that they are part of the job and their skills are highly needed. This can be done by involving them in the discussions. This will gain the nurse self confidence and they would feel their importance.

Employers should not lose these assistants as these nurses are highly demanded. If their assistant nurse is facing burnout or need counseling then they should provide them with Specialists.

Employers can send appreciation to every nursing assistants and the entire team as a whole using employment news letters. These news letters are important stuff as people read this. These news letters plus the appreciation letter may be given to the employees on pay day to make them feel extremely important. If a medical institute takes part in Employee Appreciation Day then the employers should fully utilize the day to appreciate their employees. Raises and bonuses and other monetary and non -monetary benefits should be provided to these assistants to motivate these workers so they work much harder than they already do.

Most of these nurses do not choose this profession to gain recognition. Their main aim is to help others fight diseases and make them feel comfortable when they need it the most. Not being appreciated makes the nurse lack of motivation. This even adds up with the burnout and overworked feeling that these nurses are affected with. This makes them leave the profession. All employers and medical staff should work in the interest of making these nurses feel that they are very important part of this profession and they are most needed. Many people have the idea that these nurses are not well educated and are of no good use. This will minimize the number of nurse assistants.

The work of the CNA is that they get into one kind of relationship or another with their residents. CNA do not want to stop serving for the residents they care about and will ask their employers to assign them to those residents whom they are closely attached to. The CNA ends up spending more time with those residents whom they are close to and lesser time with the other residents.

It is unhealthy if a resident gets too close with the CNA. The patient is dependent on the CNA to be happy. They refuse the help of the other CNA and have a bad day if they do not meet their co-CNA. Many patients fall in love with their CNA. It has already been experienced that a CNA got a crush with their patient. The age factor is not even important.

Working relations and other residents suffer when the CNA assigned to them neglects them for another resident and other CNA has to take care of other residents.

An important note on being close with the resident’s family:

Many times relationship develops between the CNA and family members of a resident. This is even worse than having a relationship with the resident itself.

Often times:

The family may not accept any other CNA than the one they are attached to. They might end up doing responsibilities they are not even trained for. All the talking done by the aide will be listened to carefully and if anything wrong is spoken then matters get worse.

People might use the CNA as a spy for the families they work for and the important and confidential information might be leaked. The CNA might end up sharing important information about the hospital with the resident’s family and a major problem might take place. Goon might even threaten to kill the CNA if the CNA did not share information they need.

Some aides might end up thinking that families might have some superhold over a facility. There is nothing true in this. Only government bodies have the” power”; as legal standards do.

Other aides might use these families to get themselves assigned to residents they like. Aides might even ask financial help from the families they serve by telling them about their hardships. Aides even try to become a permanent helper of a resident with the help of the families. The aides involved in such doings should be kicked off.

It is never healthy that a CNA has a relationship with a resident or its family. The biggest problem attached to this case is that once a resident and CNA come emotionally and physically close then it is hard to separate them from each other. It is good to change the staff serving for each person in a very short period of time. This should be done every month, every week or every year. We all want the best for the residents. We all sympathize with the condition of the residents but it is not necessary that if we sympathize for someone we end up in a friendly relationship with them.

Nursing assistants maintain relationships with the patients and their families. We are always ready to help them and work much harder for them. Nobody is disturbed by this behavior. But in some cases our relationships get unsafe for us, the resident, the other residents we have been allotted to; the people we work with and our peers.

Being Objective

In some cases aides become biased and forget the most important role of remaining neutral. This is wrong and we should give the correct report about the residents. This report should contain the way a resident works and performs their duties and all this information should be made by being objective. The CNA fails to correctly report about those residents whom they are closed to.

If a resident is reported wrongly for example a resident does not know how to dress him self and is reported as he knows it. This would affect the resident as other CNA would be frustrated if they found that the earlier one has not reported correctly. Families of these loved ones are even frustrated that their loved one cannot perform the task for which he was reported positive.

We have to follow professional limitations

CNAs are said to be experienced in the caregiver-patient relationship. A CNA is restricted to keep a doctor – patient relationship with the resident. We are credit worthy for the comfort we deliver. According to ethical discussions the CNA has the power over the resident. This relationship is an advantage to the CNA and not the resident. It is not healthy when a professional relationship turns into a friendly one. When relationships turn into a friendly one, then one CNA demands more special care for the resident when it is not even required. CNAs start getting close with the families of the resident and this has a serious legal implications.

There are instances when CNAs cross their limitations and the results are bad for them. These limitations are:

1. When CNAs spend time with the residents after job timings.
2. When they share secrets with the patients and their families.
3. If you get defensive when they are asked about their relationship with the patient and their families.
4. If gifts are shared between them and their patients.
5. When the patient thinks that you are the only one who can take care of them.
6. When you flirt with a patient.
7. When you become objective about a resident.

It is very hard to break the close relationship with your patients. Firstly you have to recognize that you are wrong. Secondly you have to get away from the resident. It is better to get out gradually than breaking up quickly. Many times if the employers find these problems, they assign the CNA to another resident.

A CNA can get a different assignment. If you report about your relationship you might end up facing problems. Professionals keep such stuff to themselves. It is very hard to tell the resident or patient that you are being assigned to a different resident. Let the nurses inform them if such thing happens. Professionals should not cross their limitations if they do not want to get in trouble or want to be disregarded as professionals.
